Routine Vehicle Maintenance is the Best Way to Protect Your Investment

There are consequences to ignoring routine maintenance on your vehicle.

Failure to take care of your car can lead to the malfunction of specific parts or even whole systems.

Regular oil changes and keeping up with the coolant levels will ensure that your car maintains its fuel economy, reliability, and avoid expensive repairs.

Maintenance guidelines
Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will give you a maintenance schedule to follow. These guidelines are determined by the type of driving you do and the climate in which you live.

Some of the parts and systems that need to be checked and/or changed out regularly are:

  • Oil
  • Belts
  • Brakes
  • Transmission
  • Coolant
  • Tires
  • Hoses
  • Spark plugs and spark plug wires
  • Air filter
This is not an exhaustive list because different types of vehicles require individual care.

Warranties and service contracts
In addition to following the recommended maintenance schedule, warranties and service contracts can help you protect your investment.

Each situation is different, so make sure you understand exactly what you’re getting with your car’s warranty. Get it in writing!

Keep in mind that nothing is standard when it comes to repairs and that warranties are subject to certain limitations.

These limitations include things like:
  • How much time has gone by.
  • The vehicle’s mileage.
  • Deductibles.
  • Who is doing the repair work.
Service contracts are different than warranties and are sold by the dealer, separately. Like warranties, there are stipulations. Make sure you understand exactly what those are before you decide if it’s worth it to purchase this additional coverage.

They aren’t all the same, and prices can vary, but there can usually be some negotiation.
