Don’t Let Winter Get the Better of Your Car: Here’s Help

No season is as hard on your vehicle as winter.

The snow, sleet, ice, and freezing temperatures all take a toll, not to mention the salt.

You can come out of the other side of winter – year after year – if you follow some of these winter car care tips.

1. Keep an eye on your battery.

Temperatures that dip below freezing can reduce your battery power by as much as 50%.

That’s why it’s so important that you monitor the state of your battery throughout the winter months.

It’s generally suggested (though you should always defer to your owner’s manual) that a battery that shows obvious signs of wear and tear or that is more than five years old should be inspected by a professional to see if it should be replaced.

2. Swap out the wiper blades.
Your wiper blades pull double-duty in the winter, clearing your windshield of snow and other moisture.

Any tears or other signs that they’re in good shape means they need to be replaced right away.

It’s a good idea to change them out about twice a year.

3. Make visibility a priority.

It’s a no-brainer, but, for safety’s sake, make sure your windows are free from any snow or ice before you hit the road.

You won’t regret investing in a high-quality ice scraper. Use it to clear your windows instead of using your wipers because they could be damaged by the ice.

Of course, it’s not safe to drive with your lights hidden or dimmed by a collection of snow. Always check them before attempting to drive.

It’s especially important in the winter to make sure all of your exterior lights are working properly. You do a lot more driving after dark during this season.

4. Get your oil changed.
The freezing temps can damage your vehicle’s oil.

The cold weather causes oil to thicken, making it harder for your engine to do its job efficiently.

Your owner’s manual should be your go-to as far the type of oil that’s best for your car and how often the oil needs to be changed.

The Bottom Line
Keep up with the necessary tasks to keep your vehicle running at its optimum level this winter.
