Airbag Safety 101: Here’s What You Need to Know About a Simple Safety Feature

Chances are, you don’t think too much about airbags.

You assume they’re there, ready to do their duty if needed.

But having some information about these lifesavers can help you to be as safe as possible – because they can CAUSE injury, too.

Here are 3 facts about airbags you need to know.

1. Airbags are powerful

They deploy at a speed of 200 miles per hour – within milliseconds of an accident.

2. There are different types of airbags

Four kinds, actually.

  • Frontal collision airbags protect your and your passenger’s head and torso.

  • Frontal collision passenger side front adaptive airbags detect presence, weight, and seat position, and will deactivate when children or small people are on the seat.

  • Front and back side airbags will protect the torso.

  • Side curtain airbags protect an occupant’s head, shield you from flying debris, and stay inflated for a longer period of time to give greater protection during a side-impact or rollover accident.

3. You can take steps to reduce airbag injury

These tips can prevent injury from an airbag’s powerful deployment.

  • Wear your seatbelt.

  • Keep at least 10 inches between your body and the center of the steering wheel. This goes for passengers and the dashboard, too.

  • Move your seat back as far as you can while still being able to drive safely.

  • Children under 12 should sit in the back seat.

  • If your airbag light is illuminated, get it checked out asap.

  • Replace your airbag after it has been deployed.

Your safety matters

While airbags have significantly lowered the number of people who die in vehicle accidents, they still have the potential to cause harm.
