Honda #THUMBSUP Safety Initiative – Mom (Updated)

Editor’s note: This post was originally published on 5/13/16 and has been updated for accuracy and comprehension.

In 2016, Honda launched this initiative to remind drivers about the dangers of texting and driving.

If you have to choose between paying attention to the road and paying attention to your mom, choose the road.

Mom will understand.

Honda asks you to keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel and your #ThumbsUp.

Don't text and drive.

The fight isn’t over

Just because this initiative ended doesn’t mean that the job is done.

You don’t need grisly, accident-scene pictures to remind you that it’s never safe to drive distracted.

Here are some important things you need to know:

  • At any given moment, there are 660,000 drivers in the U.S. using an electronic device while they’re operating their vehicle.

  • There is a significantly higher risk for accident when the driver is texting.

  • There are three main distractions associated with taking your eyes off the road:

    • Taking your eyes off the road.

    • Taking your hands off the wheel.

    • Taking your mind off of what you’re doing.

  • Newer drivers are more likely to drive distracted.

  • The CDC statistics show that, in the United States, 9 people are killed everyday in an automobile accident in that’s the result of distracted driving. In addition, more than 1600 are injured.
